Surface Preparation for Limewash

Preparing Walls for ZUBRA Limewash Paint

ZUBRA Limewash paints are an excellent choice for various masonry surfaces, including plasters, bricks, and clay-straw bricks, due to their ability to penetrate the material and create a breathable yet protective coating. They are suitable not only for new surfaces but also for previously painted walls, gypsum board, or plaster.

For Previously Painted Walls, Gypsum Board, or Plaster:

  • Ensure Proper Surface Preparation: It is crucial to ensure the surface is properly prepared, as Limewash paint and primer will not cover imperfections such as drywall joint lines or filler materials. This prevents any irregularities from showing through the final paint layer.
  • Basic Priming: Start by applying two coats of high-quality water-based primer for gypsum board. The goal is to ensure uniform absorption across the entire wall—use the undiluted product at full strength.
  • Specialized Primer: Next, apply one coat of our dedicated ZUBRA primer using a roller. This is designed to facilitate the application of Limewash paint and enhance the durability of painting on previously painted walls.
  • Limewash Paint Application: Finally, apply the Limewash paint using a brush in 2–3 layers, depending on the desired result. Typically, two layers are sufficient to achieve the desired effect.

Preparing the wall in this way ensures that the final painting will be uniform, durable, and exceptionally aesthetic, allowing you to fully utilize the natural properties of Limewash paint.

Is the Use of ZUBRA Primer Necessary?

Our ZUBRA Primer is designed as a unique complementary product that acts as an intermediary between traditional paints and primers, aimed at enhancing durability and facilitating the application of Limewash paint. It is important to be aware that both ZUBRA Limewash paint and ZUBRA Primer do not have masking capabilities. Instead, they allow for the subtle visibility of the texture and history of the surface on which they are applied.

For Natural Surfaces such as Unpainted Plaster, Brick, Stone, Masonry, or Clay Brick:

No primer is needed. Limewash paint can be applied directly to such prepared surfaces, allowing you to fully utilize its natural breathable and aesthetic properties.

For Previously Painted Surfaces such as Plaster, Bricks, Stone, Masonry, or Clay Brick:

  • Make any necessary surface repairs and ensure that all dust and loose particles are thoroughly removed. In this case, a primer is not required.
  • For surfaces with a previous layer of paint with any degree of gloss, it is recommended to sand thoroughly to ensure better adhesion.
  • For interior masonry walls that have been previously painted and have an uneven finish or a glossy finish, it is recommended to apply one coat of ZUBRA Primer. This will help achieve a more uniform finish before applying Limewash paint.

For our Limewash paint, we recommend a finish with rich texture, highlighting its natural, textured character. Gypsum walls can be prepared in a way that ensures the desired texture, similar to preparation for traditional paints.
