F.A.Q

1. How much Limewash paint do I need?

Limewash and PrepCoat have a coverage of approx. 1L = 15 m² per coat.

  • PrepCoat: 1 coat
  • Limewash: usually 2 coats (3 for very light colors)

Example: For a 30 m² wall, you need approximately:
2L PrepCoat + 4L Limewash Paint

We recommend ordering 250 ml testers to try the color and effect at home.

2. Do I need a smooth wall?

Smooth plaster is optional, but for light colors, it helps achieve a more even finish.

  • On dark colors, surface irregularities may be less visible.
  • On light colors, imperfections might stand out more.

If you want a perfectly even result, smoothing the surface is recommended.

3. How should I prime the wall for Limewash?

PrepCoat by ZUBRA COLORS is a mineral primer made specifically for lime-based paints. Suitable for:

  • Plaster, gypsum, drywall, traditional paint, decorative plasters, brick

If the surface is fragile, dusty, or unstable, we recommend a deep-penetrating primer before applying PrepCoat.

Note: Other primers may not work well with Limewash. PrepCoat ensures proper water absorption. If the surface is not absorbent, the paint may drip or streak.

4. Is Limewash paint washable?

No – Limewash is a natural paint and does not form a sealed layer like latex.

It behaves more like watercolor – beautiful once dry, but it can reactivate when exposed to water.

For areas exposed to dirt or moisture (like kitchens or bathrooms), we recommend:

  • ZUBRA COLORS Sealer – a clear protective coating
  • Or repainting the affected area with Limewash

5. What brush should I use to apply Limewash?

We recommend two types of brushes:

  • Traditional 12 cm brush – perfect for single-color applications
  • Double brush – ideal for effects with two shades (e.g. blending, clouding)

Both are available in our product range.

6. Do I need to hire a professional painter?

No, you don’t have to!

Limewash is one of the simplest decorative finishes you can apply yourself – no experience required. The process is easy and enjoyable.

7. What is Limewash paint exactly?

It’s a natural mineral paint, known and used for thousands of years.

Made from lime and pigments, it creates a unique, soft texture with delicate color transitions and a beautiful matte finish.

ZUBRA COLORS Limewash is crafted in Europe using the highest quality ingredients. Like patina, it gains depth and character over time.

8. What are the benefits of Limewash paint?

  • 100% natural and eco-friendly
  • Breathable – does not trap moisture
  • Mold and mildew resistant due to high pH
  • Hypoallergenic and safe for children and pets
  • Purifies the air by neutralizing toxins and odors

9. Where can I use Limewash paint?

ZUBRA COLORS Limewash is perfect for interiors, including:

  • Living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms
  • Furniture, décor pieces, even ceilings

Note: In shower cabins, use a two-component sealer. In very humid areas, we recommend using Tadelakt instead.

10. What surfaces can I paint with Limewash?

With PrepCoat, you can apply Limewash on:

  • Gypsum plaster, smooth walls, drywall, traditional paint, concrete, brick

If you have lime-cement plaster, first apply a deep-penetrating primer, then PrepCoat.

11. How do I apply Limewash?

  • Apply PrepCoat and let it dry for at least 6 hours
  • Paint Limewash using crisscross brush strokes
  • Wait at least 6 hours (preferably overnight) before the second coat

The final look depends on technique – but don’t worry, Limewash naturally creates beautiful variations.

12. What is the coverage of Limewash?

  • 1L covers approx. 15 m² per coat
  • PrepCoat: 1 coat
  • Limewash: usually 2 coats (3 for lighter colors)

Coverage may vary depending on color and surface type. We include notes with recommendations for each order.

13. Do I need to prime the walls?

Yes – we always recommend using PrepCoat by ZUBRA COLORS.

It’s a mineral primer designed for lime-based paints. It ensures even absorption and a better finish.

We don’t recommend testing other primers – results may be unpredictable (e.g. streaks, adhesion issues).

14. Do I need to protect the surface?

If you're painting an area prone to stains (e.g. kitchen, sink area), use ZUBRA COLORS Sealer.

This transparent varnish:

  • Protects the surface
  • Makes cleaning easier
  • May slightly darken the color
  • Requires repainting if damaged

15. Do you offer custom colors?

Yes! If you have a specific color or NCS code, we can create a custom mix for you.

Minimum quantity: 1L + prepayment

Orders via contact form or WhatsApp.

16. Do all colors create the same effect?

Not exactly.

  • Light colors – softer and more subtle transitions
  • Darker colors – more textured and deeper visual impact

For a stronger effect, you can layer two shades – for example, a darker base and a lighter top coat.

17. Will the color be identical in every order?

Limewash is a natural product – slight differences between batches may occur.

We recommend ordering the full quantity needed for your project at once to ensure color consistency.

18. Is Limewash glossy?

No – Limewash is fully matte. That’s its natural character.

If you want a subtle sheen, you can polish the surface using a soft sponge or spatula (on smooth walls).

19. How can I fix stains or damage?

Limewash can be easily touched up:

  • Use the same paint from the original container
  • Blend lightly with a brush into the damaged area
  • Apply a very thin layer

For stains: wipe gently with a damp cloth, then repaint

For larger repairs: repaint the entire wall

20. Can I polish Limewash like Venetian plaster?

Yes, if the wall is smooth.

Use a soft, fine sponge or spatula and polish in circular motions.

Polishing:

  • Adds subtle shine
  • Enhances depth and color variation
  • Works only on non-textured, smooth walls
